Tujuan dari penelitian adalah mengkaji peran kereta api pada masa kolonial di Medan dan pengaruhnya terhadap masyarakat Sumatera Utara pada tahun 1865-2020. Metode penelitian ini bersifat kualitatif deskriptif dengan mengamati sebanyak mungkin orang, kelompok, atau peristiwa yang berbeda untuk mengkarakterisasi, mengklarifikasi, dan memberikan jawaban yang lebih menyeluruh terhadap pertanyaan penelitian.. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bagaimana peran kereta api pada masa kolonial di Medan dan pengaruhnya terhadap masyarakat Sumatera Utara pada tahun 1865-2020.
