Abstract

Artikel ini membahas tentang kepemimpinan Thomas Stanford Raffles di Indonesia 1811-1816 serta kebijakan yang ia terapkan kepada masyarakat Indonesia kala itu dan dampak yang dirasakan. Metode yang digunakan untuk penelitian ini adalah metode penelitian sejarah dengan empat tingkatan, yaitu heuristik, kritik, interpretasi dan sejarah. Berdasarkan hasil analisis yang dilakukan diketahui bahwa Raffles adalah seorang pemahaman Liberal yang sangat terpengaruh oleh masa pencerahan dan revolusi Prancis. Pemerintahannya tidak berlangsung lama di Indonesia hanya 1811-1816, Raffles ditugaskan oleh Inggris ke Indonesia khususnya pulau Jawa untuk melindunginya dari ancaman dari negara luar karena Jawa adalah pusat strategis bagi Inggris untuk berkuasa di Indonesia. Dalam pemerintahannya di Indonesia Raffles banyak menerapkan kebijakan seperti Indirect Rule, Sistem Landrente, Penghapusan Perbudakan dan system Tribute, tentunya kebijakan yang dibuat Raffles berdasarkan pikiran rasionalnya terhadap Kerajaan Inggris dan dampaknya untuk masyarakat kala itu.
